My Thoughts:
Even though this series is kind of old, I really enjoyed it, although a lot of it left me confused and the ending was unsatisfying. Then again, most endings are like that.
What was it with Rei? The fact that she was just a tool and had replacements was briefly explained, but not why she was so important to Shinji's father. It seemed as if she had the power to bring Yui (Shinji's mother) back to life, but it wasn't actually said. It seemed as if she was supposed to like Shinji's father, but fell in love with Shinji instead. And it broke my heart when she died.
The Angels weren't really explained well. It seemed as if the SEELE were controlling them, because they wanted the world to be peaceful???
And the end was totally unsatisfying. Shinji saves the world but everyone including him, loses their memory of what happened. Even Asuka, although Shinji seemed to recognize her at the end.
